If you’ve been following Midwest Fashion Week for long, you’ve come to learn that we believe fashion is so much more than clothes and accessories. It’s about beauty, individuality, design, and creativity that knows no bounds. It’s a lifestyle. That’s where Dr. Ameer Baroudi comes in. A cosmetic dentist and clinical professor originally from Syria, Ameer has a unique look at the world of beauty and design, and how they intertwine to create a story of their own for each patient he encounters. We recently sat down with him to chat about fashion, travel and his experience on the Midwest Fashion Week runway!

Tell us a little bit about your background and your career history.

I was born and grew up in Syria surrounded by a lovely and supportive family. I can remember that all I wanted was to be a dentist, but not just any dentist. I’ve always looked up to my dad who was a well-known dentist and philanthropist. Through his legacy, I learned that if you have a big dream you have to fight for it. I moved to the United States to pursue my higher education facing cultural and language barriers and no support system. After finishing my residency and laudable of degrees, I was hired as the youngest professor at UIC in Chicago. Currently, I’m a clinical professor at UCLA in Los Angeles and working as a cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills. I specialize in creating smiles for all people with different backgrounds and nationalities residing in Chicago, Dubai and Los Angeles.

Do you think your background and experiences as an American immigrant have benefited or hindered your career? How so?

Yes, definitely! My experiences are very unique as an immigrant. For the past 15 years, I have seen patients from all around the world with different background and beliefs from the Middle East, Africa, South America and here in North America. I understand where they came from and what they are looking for.

You participated in Midwest Fashion Week’s Doctors on the Runway show a few years back – what was that experience like?

Doctors on the Runway was a great experience, especially since it was benefiting cancer fighters and survivors. It means a lot to me to be part of a great cause!

Were you always interested in fashion or was that a transformative experience for you?

Yes, I have always been interested in fashion and what’s trendy. I feel designers and cosmetic dentists have the same mindset — we look at the fine details!

You’re saying there is a relationship between fashion and dentistry! Please explain?

Designers and dentists are innovators. The idea that design is really a thinking methodology that designers use to identify unarticulated and unmet needs. As a cosmetic dentist, I use design to create an exceptional experience for each patient. Every smile deserves special attention.

How does fashion play a role in your life and career?

In aesthetic dentistry when we design a smile, we look at the symmetry of the face, skin tone, color and light exposure and have a vision with very fine details in mind — exactly how the fashion designer starts designing a dress with the characteristics that define beauty.

How would you describe your personal style?

I like to dress up and look sharp at work. You’re presenting yourself to people every day and you need to look professional.

I hear you’re a jet setter and love to travel! What is your favorite place you’ve visited so far and why?

It would be Dubai. Dubai is like a melting pot of cultures and lifestyle. Dubai combines a modern metropolis with a timeless sensibility and Arabian flair.

What do you love most about what you do?

What I love most about what I do as an aesthetic dentist and philanthropist is that I have the power to draw a smile on each person’s face and give back to our community. Those tears of joy and happiness I see on people’s face always make my day.
