The weather is warming up, and we’re finding ourselves happily switching coats for jackets, and wool slacks for lighter garments. So, what should you pick up the next time you’re shopping for new items? Here’s a quick list of the spring 2021 trends that you should indulge in.

Spoiler: A lot of these were popular in the mid-1990s…

Oversized Denim

Wide-legs, high rise, baggy – oversized denim is back. Full-length oversized denim looks best when paired with a heel, and cropped length can be worn with cute flats. To offset the oversized shape on bottom, they are best paired with fitted tops and blazers. Stylist tip: Baggy denim is great, but make sure it fits you perfectly through the waist and hips to avoid looking frumpy.

Metallics

Metallics are in! Silver slacks, shimmery dresses, disco pants in bold colors – all are making their way to the streets. For a more casual look, pair shiny pants with a concert tee. For a dressier look, go for the shimmery dress.

Sheer

Sheer is back and in a big way – the sheer blouse over a camisole, cute bra, or bralette, and the sheer dress over a slip dress is a great way to jazz things up. If you’ll be wearing it over a camisole, look for a shade that is close to your skin tone. If you’ll be wearing over a dress, stick to tone on tone. Rocking the bra? Make a statement, love!

Statement Collars

Big statement collars – yes like the 1980s – are also in right now. Look for ruffles on collars, crochet or lace elements on collars, giant Peter Pan collars, and even some nods to Ruth Bader Ginsberg. To avoid looking costumed, make sure to add modern elements like the French tuck or half-tuck on shirts, and choose sweaters, leather bottoms, in current color palettes.

Oversized Blazers

The oversized blazer is also making its way to the streets this spring. To do this trend right, make sure you’re pairing this with well-fitting coordinates — an oversize blazer is chic with a fitted dress or mini skirt in a coordinating print or color!

Micro Minis

Speaking of minis, the micro mini skirt is also back. Bold jewel tones and leather are really popular right now, as are fun details like fringe cut-outs and asymmetrical hems. Have fun with this look, and be sure to wear it love on the hips! In addition to pairing a micro mini with oversized blazers, pairing it with a loose-fitting blouse and chunky belt is another chic way to style it.

Wrap Skirts

This year’s wrap skirts are colorful and follow two silhouettes – wrap pencil skirt and ruffled A-line. For the pencil skirt, you’ll want to look for solid colors in textured fabrics such as knit, leather, or micro-suede. As for the ruffled A-line, these are really gorgeous in floral prints and at full-length. Wear with a cute tank and denim jacket for an easy and flirty look.

Slinky Knits

Knits that skim the body are in. Look for mesh knits, thin knits, and even knit bodysuits. Choose either a bold color or a bold print and pair with classic pieces for a polished look. Many spotted rocking this trend are matching their tops and bottoms in separate pieces for a cohesive look.

Black Face Masks

Bold masks had their moment, but now classic black is taking the lead. While mask-outfit coordination had its moment, face masks in this classic color are both versatile and practical – especially if you’re going to be double masking this spring. Stylist tip: There are different shades of black, so be sure that the shade you pick compliments your skin tone.

Yellow Bags

Here’s a trend I can definitely get on board with…yellow is my happy color! Yellow bags are showing up everywhere, and the most popular ones are structured shoulder bags and top handle bags. Want to make this trend work for you? Pair a bold yellow bag with a more neutral base, or pull out all the stops and mix brights for a bold, sunny look.

White Knee-High Boots

This just might be the biggest boot trend of 2021. Look for pairs that remind you of the 1960s with modern updates. Chunky heels with square toe-boxes, kitten heels with a flare at the knee, slouchy styles with silver studs – pair these with your mini skirts and ruffled wrap skirts for a flirty and fun look.

Which trends are you most excited to try this spring?
