The twelve-week program, hosted at Brooklyn Public Library’s Central Branch in concert with Pratt Institute’s Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator (BF+DA) and Mood Fabrics, will provide fifteen aspiring fashion designers with a practical education, studio time, library resources and contact with professional designers and outside organizations to help them market their brands, produce their collections, and sell their products– all for free. The program will hinge on the history and fashion of Les Sapeurs, a Congolese subculture dedicated to the cult of style as a way to transcend severe poverty. Les Sapeurs, or members of the Societe des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Elegantes (the Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People), weave together bright colors and suave, elegant style to turn the streets of Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, into a nightly fashion show.
